Welcome to the Waikato Equine Intensive Care Unit (WEICU).
We are a neonatal equine hospital open during the breeding and foaling season in Cambridge, New Zealand (August-December) only
The WEICU works closely with your veterinarian to provide 24 hour care and monitoring of sick horses and foals. As a hospital we have the ability to maintain foals on oxygen, provide nutrition every 1 to 2 hours, give fluids to keep them hydrated and provide a variety of other treatments. We can run several bloodwork tests at the hospital to provide quicker results and evaluation of each case.
We offer:
Care of orphan foals and fostering when a mare becomes available
Onsite blood gas, electrolytes, lactate, glucose, hematocrit, total protein, and gluteraldhyde testing.
24 hour care and monitoring of all types of intensive equine patients.
WEICU is staffed by internationally experienced vet nurses who have spent time in critical care hospitals in England, Ireland and Canada.
